Goose Hollow

The Goose Hollow neighborhood can be found in southwest Portland, Oregon, in the United States. Historically, locals in the area around Tanner Creek Gulch and the wooded ravine in the Tualatin Mountains known as the Tanner Creek Canyon let their geese roam freely, hence the name. Beginning at what is now SW 17th and Jefferson, Tanner Creek Gulch was a 20-block-long, 50-foot-deep gulch (hollow) that funneled Tanner Creek’s waters into Couch Lake (the present-day location of Old Town/Chinatown and the Pearl District). Tanner Creek Gulch was filled in and buried fifty feet below ground over a century ago, but the creek itself is still draining the West Hills. So, the only thing that’s left of the hollow is the ravine carved out by Tanner Creek, through which The Sunset Highway carrying US-26 passes and the Vista Bridge spans.

The proximity to the city center makes this an attractive location for young professionals and sports fans. The unique identity of Goose Hollow is rooted in its rich past, which also provides the neighborhood with its distinctive name. A large number of the women in the area raised geese in the undeveloped areas that existed at the time the community was established. Despite the name’s longevity, you’d be hard pressed to spot any wild geese roaming the streets today.

This established, residential neighborhood is conveniently located near the heart of the city. Fans of soccer will feel at home with not one but two historic clubs. Both the Portland Thorns FC and the Portland Timbers FC play their home games at Providence Park. Participate in the home crowd support by going to the stadium, or if you can’t get tickets in time, watch the game at one of the many nearby sports bars while sipping a locally brewed beer.

Do you like to recycle and reuse things? Scrap is Portland’s most beloved creative reuse center, and it’s bursting at the seams with everything you need for your next weekend’s DIY. Curious as to why Goose Hollow received a perfect score of 5 in the category of Beauty & Parks? Washington Park is located next door and features the International Rose Garden, several museums, a wilderness area, and even a zoo, in addition to some of the best views of the city.

Goose Hollow is one of Portland’s oldest neighborhoods, but because of its central location, rich history, and stunning parks, it is also one of the most costly.
